How the webcam recorder works
Your browser records straight from the camera and microphone you allow. When you stop, the video appears below with a player and a download button. You can record as many takes as you like, which is handy for practising a presentation, a video message or an interview answer.
Videos are saved in the format your browser records natively: usually WebM in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and MP4 in Safari. Most video players open both, and free converters can turn WebM into MP4 if you need it.
The preview is mirrored like a mirror by default, but the saved video always shows the true view, the way others see you on a call.
Tips for a better recording
- Light your face from the front, with a window or lamp behind the screen, not behind you.
- Use headphones with a microphone or sit close to the computer for clearer sound. Check it first with the mic test.
- Look at the camera, not the screen, so you appear to make eye contact.
- Keep recordings short. Long videos use a lot of memory until you download them.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a time limit?
No fixed limit. A few minutes of HD video can use hundreds of megabytes of memory, so download and delete long takes as you go.
My recording has no sound.
Make sure Record sound was ticked and the browser was allowed to use the microphone. The microphone not working guide covers the usual fixes.
Can I just take a photo?
Yes, use take a photo with your webcam.
