What this check tests
- Browser: that your browser can use the camera and microphone on secure pages, which every exam and interview platform needs.
- Webcam: that the camera turns on, shows a picture that isn't black, and its resolution.
- Microphone: that it picks up your voice when you speak.
- Speakers: plays a short tone and asks whether you heard it.
- Internet: that you're online and how quickly a small request gets a reply, measured several times.
- Screen: your browser window size, since many platforms need at least 1280 × 720.
- Power: whether a laptop is plugged in, where your browser shares it.
Everything runs in your browser. The camera and microphone switch off as soon as the check is done, and nothing is recorded or uploaded.
Before your exam or interview
- Close other apps that might use the camera or microphone, such as Zoom, Teams or Discord.
- Plug in your laptop and turn off battery saver, which can slow the camera and connection.
- Sit close to your Wi-Fi router or use a cable, and ask others at home not to stream video during the exam.
- Light your face from the front and clear the desk, as many proctoring tools check the room.
- Run your platform's own check too. Many exam services have a system check or a required app; use it as well as this page.
Something failed?
- Webcam: see webcam test and the webcam fixes for Windows and Mac.
- Microphone: see microphone not working.
- Speakers: see sound test.
- Internet: watch for drops with the connection test.
- Browser: check your version with browser info, and use an up-to-date Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the official check for my exam?
No. It's an independent check of your computer. Your exam or interview provider may have its own requirements or software, so follow their instructions as well.
Is my video or voice recorded?
No. The camera and microphone are only read live inside your browser and are switched off when the check finishes.
The internet check says my connection is slow.
The reply time depends on the distance to this site's server, so treat it as a rough guide. If it fails or varies a lot, move closer to the router or use a wired connection.
