1. Check the Camera app
- Open the Camera app and switch between the front and rear cameras.
- Remove the case and wipe the lenses with a soft cloth.
- If the Camera app shows a black screen, close it fully (swipe it away in the app switcher) and open it again.
2. Allow the app to use the camera
- Open Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera.
- Turn on the switch for the app you're using.
- Close the app fully and open it again.
3. Allow the camera for websites
- Safari: open Settings › Apps › Safari › Camera (on older versions, Settings › Safari › Camera) and choose Ask or Allow. On the website, tap the Aa or page-settings button in the address bar, then Website Settings.
- Chrome or another browser: allow it under Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera, as in step 2.
4. Check Screen Time restrictions
If Screen Time is set up, the camera can be turned off completely. Open Settings › Screen Time › Content & Privacy Restrictions › Allowed Apps and make sure Camera is on.
5. Close apps using the camera
A green dot at the top of the screen means the camera is in use. Open Control Centre to see which app, and close it if you don't need it.
6. Restart and update
- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Install updates under Settings › General › Software Update.
Still not working?
If the Camera app itself stays black on one or both cameras after a restart, the camera may be damaged. Contact Apple Support or an authorised service provider.
Frequently asked questions
My browser isn't in the Camera list.
Apps only appear after asking for the camera once. Open the webcam test, press start and choose Allow when asked.
The picture shakes or buzzes.
Strong vibration, such as a motorbike phone mount, can damage the camera's stabilisation. If the picture keeps shaking while the phone is still, it needs repair.
